The Story of the Perfect Bonnet

The Story of the Perfect Bonnet

There are many crochet bonnet patterns out there, but none of them were quite right for me. I didn't want a seam in the middle of my head, in fact I wanted a seamless pattern in general. I also really didn't want a point at the back of my head. While very cute, I wanted a bonnet that fit exactly like a my hoodies.

So, I looked outside of crochet. I looked at knitted and sewn hood/bonnet patterns and there was the answer! Many knitted hoods use this same seamless construction method, but I had never seen the method used in crochet yet. To get the sizing, I measured my favorite hoodies and decided on a happy medium that is fitted with extra room in the front.

For the closure, there are so many options that I decided to include multiple in the pattern. The original bonnet uses the button closure which makes it so easy to take on and off. It rarely messes up my hair and is very comfortable and secure. I also included a tie closure option since that feature, first of all, is adorable. And secondly, it uses no extra materials.

I wear my bonnet in the foggy Oregon mornings on my coffee walk with Pearl, our Labrador. It keeps my hair and face free from dew and mist, my ears warm, and layers perfectly with my other jackets and hoods when it is raining. I particularly enjoy layering the hood underneath my jacket hood to keep me extra warm on rainy days.

This pattern was created to be practical to use, efficient to work up, with a construction method that just makes sense. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do!
